A Facial at Spa Zarmina in Seattle

A good facial is not only for women, but for men as well. There are many reasons for getting facials. For some, they just want to relax and feel pampered, while others want to remove those ugly blackheads. Others like the facials as an aid in anti-aging, looking and feeling younger. There is much more to a facial so let’s unveil the mystery of a facial and discuss the process and all its benefits.

At its core, a facial is essentially one of the best ways to take care of your skin. A facial cleanse, for example, will exfoliate and nourish your skin. This will make you look younger by producing a clear, well-hydrated complexion. Your esthetician will also provide you with advice on the best skin care regime for your skin. Most importantly, facials are most effective when they are part of your on-going skin care program.

Facial Consultation

A facial should begin with a consultation between you and your esthetician. You might discuss concerns about your skin, your diet, skin care products you are currently using, as well as, which drugs and supplements you take. For example, Retin-A and other drugs can affect your skin. These factors will determine what kind of treatments your esthetician recommends.

Determining Your Skin Type before your facial

The esthetician will look at your skin under a brightly lit magnifying lamp. She is doing this to determine your basic skin type. Skin can be dry, oily, combination, sensitive or normal. Skin can also have conditions such as acne, blackheads, whiteheads, aging, sun-damage, dehydration, and more. Based on her analysis, she then consults with you about what she sees and recommends the appropriate products and treatments

Using Steam in your Facial

At Spa Zarmina, our facials include the use of a steam machine that directs a thin vapor of warm steam to your face. This helps softens up any blackheads and whiteheads to be removed and most find it very relaxing. If you have very sensitive skin, the esthetician may not use steam.

Exfoliation

Exfoliating the skin can be a process that uses mechanical or chemical substances. Mechanical exfoliants have a gritty texture that rubs away the surface dead skin cells. This type of exfoliation is done during the steam. Chemical exfoliation uses enzymes and acids to loosen the bond between skin cells. During the steam, a gentle enzyme treatment can be applied. Stronger chemical peels can vary in intensity. Further, they can be a stand-alone treatment or part of the facial.

Removal of Blackheads or Whitehead

Extractions are the removal of blackheads or whiteheads, if you want it and need it. A licensed esthetician should perform extractions as this can cause broken capillaries and discoloration if done improperly.

Facial Mask

A Facial mask is focused to your particular skin type and condition. At Spa Zarmina, while the mask is on nurturing your skin, we may provide a soothing scalp massage.

At Home Facial Care

We provide advice for caring for you skin at home. We will tell you how we think you can take better care of your skin and may recommend products. Some may feel uncomfortable with this and deem it to be just a sales pitch. It is part of the esthetician's job to provide this information.

How Often is Best to Get a Facial

Ideally, get a facial monthly as that is how long it takes the skin to regenerate. At the very least, try to have a facial at least four times a year, as the season changes. Of course, you may need it more frequently if you are trying to clear up a case of acne. Otherwise, once a month is plenty.
